  • How to make

1 tbsp vegetable oil
½ onion
1 celery stick
2-3 tbsp pearl barley
500ml vegetable stock (ideally homemade with no added salt, or a low salt alternative)
1 sprig of thyme
1 bay leaf
Pinch of black pepper
2 carrots
2 medium potatoes
¼ swede
2 tbsp quinoa
80g kale or spring greens

Step 1

Chop the onion and celery

Step 2

Heat 1 tbsp. of oil, add the onion and celery and fry gently for 3 minutes

Step 3

Add the barley, thyme, bay leaf, black pepper and vegetable stock, bring to boil, and cook at medium heat covered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally

Step 4

Chop the carrots, potato and swede into cubes

Step 5

After 1 hour, add the carrot, potato, swede and quinoa and cook until tender. Add more water if required

Step 6

Add the kale or spring greens and cook for 5 minutes before serving

Step 7

Serve as it is for toddlers, breaking up any larger chunks, or mash/blend to a suitable texture for younger babies
