  • How to make

1 onion
Splash of olive oil
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp mustard
2 tbsp tomato puree
1 tin tomatoes
1 tin haricot beans

Step 1

Peel and finely chop the onion, then sauté in a little olive oil over a low heat. Crush then add the garlic after about 5 minutes, once the onion is soft

Step 2

Add the mustard, tomato puree and tinned tomatoes and cook for another 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened

Step 3

Blend the tomato sauce until smooth (this is optional – but creates baked beans more like the traditional tinned version!)

Step 4

Rinse the haricot beans and drain, then heat in a pan with the smooth tomato sauce for 10 minutes. If sauce is a little thick, an extra splash of water can be added

Serve on toast, in a jacket potato, perhaps with a little grated cheese on top, or simply as a side dish with meat or fish and potatoes.

These can be made in advance and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
